A high-powered delegation from the Ghana Armed Forces, led by the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral, Seth Amoama, has on Tuesday 21 February 21, 2023, paid a courtesy call on the Administrator of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), Dr. Richard Ampofo Boadu, at the Fund’s Secretariat, Accra.
According to the Chief of Defense Staff, the visit was a follow up on the promise the President Akufo-Addo made on 1st February, 2023 at the Burma Camp, on the establishment of War College in the country. The President specifically called on GETFund to lead in the provision of required funding towards the construction of a model War College in Africa.
CDS Amoama said, when the President of the Republic and the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces makes such statements, it is routine that the interested primary institution takes up the task by following through with the critical stakeholders such as GETFund in this instant, in order to bring the promise into fruition.
‘’This visit is also an opportunity for us to rekindle the long-standing relationship that has existed between GAF and GETFund’’, the CDS said.
GETFund Administrator, Dr. Ampofo Boadu, in his remarks appreciated the presence of the CDS and his team in pursuit of the President’s promise. Dr. Boadu said a promise by the President in such cases relative to education projects is a direct call on GETFund to initiate the processes leading to full compliance. The GETFund Administrator assured the Military High Command that he will officially table the discussions before the Board of Trustees for their consideration and necessary action as part of the 2023 GETFund Distribution Formular.
‘’The promise by the President came at the right time as GETFund is still preparing its budget for the year 2023 for approval in March’’, Dr Boadu revealed. Though our (GETFund) total receivables have been handicapped by the Capping and the Re-Alignment Act, we will use reasonable efforts to allocate funds towards this novel Strategic Defense College in Ghana’’, GETFund Administrator added.
Major-General Irvine Aryeetey, Commandant of the GAF Command and Staff College, explained that, defense and intelligence dynamics and strategics have changed over the years of which Ghana must respond accordingly with the training and the re training of personnel of the security institutions and the affiliate bodies.
Major-General Aryeetey revealed that, the vision is to start a National Defense University (NDU) with the War College as one of its four key colleges. The Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters of the Military High Command, Burma Camp, Major-General Nicholas Peter Andoh, on his part said, it is more expensive to train officers outside of the country, worst of all, the vacancies in these War Colleges are always limited or restricted.
‘’It is worth noting that, the Military High Command is now training more cadet officers for strategic reasons. It is therefore, most crucial to establish the highest professional and academic institutions to serve the needs of the military, even beyond Africa’’, he concluded.
The following were present at the meeting;
- Brigadier-General, Augustine Asiedu, Director-General, Training, GAF
- Mr. E.A Addo, Member, GETFund Board of Trustees
- Ms. Naana Nsafoah Sarpong, Director Legal / Administration, GETFund
