Carleton University, Canada, calls on GETFund

On Thursday 23rd February, 2023, a four (4) member delegation from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, paid a courtesy call on Ghana Education Trust (GETFund) in the spirit of building partnership with regards to scholarship opportunities for GETFund future awardees.

The Leader of the delegation, Professor Dana Brown, said, the team is in Ghana to explore avenues of mutually beneficial relationships with agencies like GETFund that is known for providing financing to supplement education delivery at all levels. Professor Brown said, the Carleton University is also aware GETFund provides scholarships to Ghanaians to study abroad that include Universities in Canada.
‘’Carleton University has a very dynamic international students’ presence due to its friendly, conducive and robust academic environment suitable for students across continents’’, the Dean of Sprott School of Business said. She therefore appealed to GETFund to consider favourably in sponsoring students that gain admission to this prestigious University in Canada.

Mr. Joseph Denteh, the Deputy Administrator of GETFund, who received the visitors for and on behalf of the Administrator, Dr. Richard Ampofo Boadu, on his part, recounted how the twin disasters of COVID 19 and the Russia Ukraine war conspired to stall the Fund’s sponsoring of students abroad for two (2) years now. Mr. Denteh said, as things are beginning to normalize and people learning to live with COVID 19, GETFund in the near future will re-open its portal to invite foreign applications.

‘’GETFund is reputed for its prompt payments of fees and stipends to its scholars. No wonder, many universities home or abroad have no hesitation in accepting students with GETFund sponsorships’’, Mr. Denteh, emphasised.

According to the Deputy Administrator, GETFund does not select schools for its scholars. He said prospective scholars can only apply for sponsorship having gained admission from a university.

Mr. Denteh revealed that the current data suggest eighty percent (80%) of GETFund scholars abroad are in the United Kingdom institution with the twenty percent (20%) spread across the other universities in the world.

‘’Due to our good working relations with these United Kingdom universities, Aberdeen University for examples gives GETFund sponsored students twenty five percent (25%) rebate on fees per student. This means GETFund will be able to increase the number of scholars to this particular university’’, Mr. Denteh. explained.

The Carleton University delegation included; Isaac Otchere, Professor of Finance, Sprott School of Business, Stuart Rennie, West African Consultant, and Mawuena Torkornoo, External Relations Officer.
