GETFund Holds Orientation Workshop for 7th Board of Trustees

The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has held a 3-day Orientation Workshop for its seventeen (17) member 7th Board of Trustees at Peduase, Aburi, in the Eastern Region.

The Board Chairman, Hon. Surv. Emmanuel K. Bedzrah (MP), in his opening remarks, stated that the training workshop was designed to introduce the recently sworn-in Trustees to the overall mandate of the Fund, its general operations, vision, mission, values, and the legal framework under which GETFund was established.

The Administrator of the Fund, Mr. Paul Adjei, in his welcome address, emphasized the importance of such orientation for the new Board members. He noted that the workshop was essential in equipping Trustees with the relevant information and understanding of their roles and responsibilities to enable them to function effectively in accordance with the principles of good corporate governance.

“It is meant to equip the new board members with the knowledge and the understanding needed to effectively contribute to the Fund’s policy decision-making processes,” the Administrator added.

The workshop featured sessions led by experts in corporate governance law, public service governance structures, and strategic planning. These interactive presentations were designed to provide deeper insights into the role of Trustees and the Fund’s operational landscape. Heads of Department and Unit Heads of GETFund also delivered presentations on their respective departments, offering Trustees a comprehensive understanding of the Fund’s internal operations, structure, and organizational status.

Dr. Abdul Aziz Basit Bamba, Esq., a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law, led a session on the legal mandate of public Trust Funds. He outlined the rights and obligations of Trustees, explaining that fiduciary duties require Trustees to act solely in the interest of the Fund. He cautioned that the law prohibits Trustees from engaging in activities that present conflicts of interest with their official responsibilities.

Dr. Edward Prince Darah, a member of both the Public Services Commission (PSC) and the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), presented on the Trustees’ duties in relation to policy development. He also stressed the importance of oversight responsibilities in ensuring adherence to compliance requirements and the promotion of prudent corporate governance practices.

Dr. Hod Anyigba, an economist and strategist affiliated with Innolead International and NiBS University, facilitated a session on strategic planning. He guided the Trustees on goal setting and the importance of effective communication with stakeholders to ensure the efficient use of Trust Fund resources, ultimately leading to improved educational outcomes.

The orientation workshop also provided Trustees the opportunity to ask questions, seek clarification on relevant matters, and build professional relationships with GETFund’s management and staff. The engagement created a platform for open dialogue, knowledge sharing, and alignment around the Fund’s strategic priorities.
