In a move aimed at strengthening rehabilitation and reintegration opportunities for inmates, the Director General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.), has engaged the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to explore collaborative interventions in inmate education and vocational development.
Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie, who paid a courtesy call on the GETFund Administrator, Mr. Paul Adjei, on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the Fund’s Secretariat in Accra, outlined a strategic framework for partnership between the two institutions. The proposed collaboration seeks to expand formal education opportunities for inmates and to integrate STEM and vocational training into correctional education programmes.
According to the Director General, these initiatives form part of the Service’s broader reform agenda to reposition the Ghana Prisons Service as a modern correctional institution focused on rehabilitation rather than mere incarceration. She emphasized that enhancing literacy and technical skills among inmates would not only reduce recidivism but also promote safer reintegration into society upon release.
Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie also highlighted the importance of capacity building for prison staff, stressing that well-trained officers are crucial for sustaining humane, efficient, and forward-looking correctional practices. She invited the GETFund Administrator and his technical team to visit selected prison facilities to assess infrastructure and educational needs firsthand.
In response, Mr. Paul Adjei commended the Director General for her proactive leadership and reaffirmed GETFund’s commitment to supporting initiatives that align with national educational and socio-economic development goals. He expressed readiness to work with the Ghana Prisons Service to design a framework that will operationalize the proposed partnership.
The meeting signals a renewed national commitment to correctional reform, positioning education and skills training at the heart of inmate rehabilitation in Ghana.
